Sam Miller: Director of the Google DeepMind Impact Accelerator

Suzan (Sam) Miller has worked in the tech industry for 25+ years. With Google DeepMind for 4+ years, Sam is one of the co-founders of the Google DeepMind Impact Accelerator (GDI) team. GDI builds on Google DeepMind's technology and expertise, to create solutions that unlock AI’s potential to solve some of humanity's greatest challenges. One key aspect of that is increasing representation in AI research to bring diverse values, hopes, and concerns into conversations about the design and deployment of this transformative technology.  This starts with increasing access to AI and science through education - supporting the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) leaders to help build a stronger, more diverse and inclusive global AI community.  Google DeepMind does this across 3 broad areas:  AI for Education (AI solutions for use in Education); AI Literacy (for all students); and AI Talent Pipeline (bringing more representation into those developing and deploying AI).

In 2023, Google DeepMind partnered with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), Africa’s first network of centers of excellence in mathematical sciences, to launch an AI for Science Master’s program, with a $4.5M grant from Google DeepMind. This work builds on our existing work in region, including our support of the Deep Learning Indaba through volunteering and funding since its inception in 2017, the recent launch of our Experience AI education program across Africa, which has already engaged local educators working with more than 30,000 young people, and additional educational funding, which has been used by three further African universities to offer a total of over 40 postgraduate scholarships since 2020.

Prior to joining Google DeepMind, Sam held a number of roles, including on the board of the Intel Foundation (with a special focus on programs for Women & Girls and on Computer Literacy; as General Counsel, Intel Capital and as Intel Corporation VP and Corporate Secretary. Sam has served on the board of several other non-profits, drawing on her business and legal experiences to advise non-profits on mission-focused strategy, practical business planning, and tactical execution.
